Greg Russell Retires After 49 Years in Harbour Town

Hilton Head Island, S.C. — After nearly five decades of serenading families beneath the iconic Liberty Oak, beloved singer and entertainer Greg Russell has announced his retirement from performing in Harbour Town.

Since 1976, Russell’s nightly concerts have been a staple of summers at Sea Pines, drawing generations of visitors who gathered under the sprawling oak tree to sing along, laugh, and watch the sunset. His signature blend of heartfelt ballads, children’s singalongs, and lighthearted banter created a tradition that became inseparable from Hilton Head’s cultural identity.

Russell, now in his seventies, reflected on the decision in a heartfelt statement: “It’s been the honor of my life to be part of so many families’ vacations, to watch kids grow up, and then bring their own children back to share the same songs. The Liberty Oak stage will always feel like home to me.”

Local businesses and longtime fans are planning a series of celebrations in Russell’s honor later this fall, including a tribute concert featuring fellow musicians who have performed alongside him throughout the years.

Though he may be stepping down from the stage, Russell hinted he won’t be disappearing entirely from island life. “Hilton Head has given me so much,” he said. “I may not be singing every night anymore, but I’ll always be around to cheer on the next song.”

For many visitors, the thought of Harbour Town without Greg Russell is hard to imagine — but his music, his laughter, and his spirit under the Liberty Oak will remain part of Hilton Head’s story for generations to come.
